Violence risk assessment is the process of estimating and attempting to reduce the likelihood of future violent behavior. Historically, forensic psychologists have been called upon to assess risk in criminal cases, particularly during pre-trial proceedings, sentencing, and to evaluate suitability for parole or probation. In recent years, however, the use of violence risk assessments has expanded into various other settings.
Assessing the risk of future violence is inherently challenging, and errors in judgment can have serious consequences. Because of this, it is crucial to rely on highly trained forensic psychologists to conduct these assessments. While it is impossible to predict any future event with certainty, forensic psychologists are uniquely qualified to evaluate an individual’s potential for violent behavior and to offer an opinion regarding that level of risk with a reasonable degree of professional certainty.
Forensic psychologists use multiple methods to determine the nature and degree of risk an individual may pose for violence. Though an individual’s future behavior cannot be predicted with absolute certainty, psychologists can offer informed opinions on the likelihood of violence, how soon a violent event might occur, how serious the violence may be, and the specific circumstances that might increase or decrease the risk. We understand that risk for violence is dependent on situations and circumstances and subject to change, so we provide detailed reports which outline in which circumstances an individual’s risk increases and decreases.
At Dr. Robin Lowey & Associates, our forensic psychologists use empirically supported risk assessment tools to ensure our evaluations consider all relevant factors. Our detailed reports not only assess an individual’s risk but also provide recommendations for risk management strategies that can help mitigate and manage various risk factors effectively.
